You can, and it goes wrong often enough that a fair share of recovery calls are cleaning up after exactly that. Chains on unrated points bend and tear expensive parts. A winch-out is usually the cheaper end of the day.
The goal is that it comes out in the condition it went in. That means taking time over the anchor points and the angle rather than pulling hard from wherever is convenient.
